Franklin King and Laura Scales Houses at Smith College (Northampton, MA)

On this stately building, the new barrel-vaulted entrance roofs and new window had to look like they'd been built in 1930, and the expanded dining room had to uphold its grand tradition. Every renovated space, including corridors and lounges, elevators, 144 dormitory rooms, a new commercial kitchen and dining facilities, now function easily and comfortably. The historic renovation included a complete replacement of existing mechanical, electrical, fire alarm and sprinkler systems in a manner compatible with existing finishes. The project also had an extremely tight timeframe—over the summer break while students were off campus. The rooms were ready for them when school started in the fall.
