Silver Meadow Apartments (Wales, MA)
A group of community members wanted to develop a 20-unit low cost elderly housing facility so that their relatives and friends could remain within their home community. They acquired a quiet countryside 14-acre site that was limited by wetlands and needed on-site wells, leach fields and parking. Our firm worked with the community group to create a scheme of single story buildings clustered around a central green courtyard. Careful site planning allowed maximum preservation of wetlands. Within the budget restrictions of a HUD 202 financed project, we steered away from a boxy, impersonal look, working diligently to craft a sense of community and familiarity. The final design creates a comfortable mix of private and public areas, with views of the site's natural beauty and room for backyard gardening.
