When The Past And Present Mean One Thing: Perfection
Dietz & Company Architects Renovates College Hall at Smith College
Springfield, Mass. – College Hall presides
over the Smith College campus with
a stately presence that is its due. The
Grécourt Gates in front open onto the
Main Street in Northampton, Mass. Built
in 1875, this Gothic influenced building
originally housed the entire Smith College
campus. So when Smith College needed
to renovate it, an architecture firm that
could impeccably meld the new and
historic together was critical. For Smith
College it meant choosing Dietz &
Company Architects.
The $2.9 million renovation included
re-programming the traffic flow in this
busy, 32,000 square foot building. Since
this involved relocating departments,
the project called for renovating existing
offices and carving additional offices
out of available space. The renovation
also encompassed mechanical, heating,
plumbing, fire alarm, sprinkler and
electrical upgrades building-wide. In
addition to structural re-configurations
and finish upgrades, the project included
upgrading accessibility throughout.

College Hall is home to the President,
Controller, Dean, Provost, and many
of the college's other administrative
offices. In total it includes 14 departments
and 75 work areas. Dietz & Company
Architects worked with each department
to ensure satisfaction and that relocation
needs were met. As a result, the re-
configuration allowed many departments
to expand and improve their office space.
At the same time, Smith College met
its space efficiency goals, improved the
physical organization of its administrative
departments and streamlined the building's
traffic flow. All renovations were done
over the summer, with College Hall ready
for occupancy in September 2006.
