When The Past And Present Mean One Thing: Perfection Dietz & Company Architects Renovates College Hall at Smith College Springfield, Mass. – College Hall presides over the Smith College campus with a stately presence that is its due. The Grécourt Gates in front open onto the Main Street in Northampton, Mass. Built in 1875, this Gothic influenced building originally housed the entire Smith College campus. So when Smith College needed to renovate it, an architecture firm that could impeccably meld the new and historic together was critical. For Smith College it meant choosing Dietz & Company Architects. The $2.9 million renovation included re-programming the traffic flow in this busy, 32,000 square foot building. Since this involved relocating departments, the project called for renovating existing offices and carving additional offices out of available space. The renovation also encompassed mechanical, heating, plumbing, fire alarm, sprinkler and electrical upgrades building-wide. In addition to structural re-configurations and finish upgrades, the project included upgrading accessibility throughout.
College Hall is home to the President, Controller, Dean, Provost, and many of the college's other administrative offices. In total it includes 14 departments and 75 work areas. Dietz & Company Architects worked with each department to ensure satisfaction and that relocation needs were met. As a result, the re- configuration allowed many departments to expand and improve their office space. At the same time, Smith College met its space efficiency goals, improved the physical organization of its administrative departments and streamlined the building's traffic flow. All renovations were done over the summer, with College Hall ready for occupancy in September 2006. With the characteristic attention that Dietz & Company Architects gives to its work, the resulting renovations to College Hall blend seamlessly with the building's historic past.
